Wellness is a broad term describing the holistic approach to physical and psychological health. As opposed to western traditional medicine, which focuses on physical aspect of health only, this view puts an emphasis on overall lifestyle, the state of entire being as characterized by integration of and balance between body, mind, and spirit. For this reason, wellness is often described as alternative medicine.
Wellness is not merely avoidance of disease, but a proactive pursuit of the highest levels of physical health as well as emotional, intellectual, and social functioning. It is a mindset, a conscious decision to adopt principles in various areas of life leading to optimum levels of satisfaction and wellbeing.
The term (in the context of alternative medicine) was first used by Halbert L. Dunn, M.D. In the 1950s, Dunn published a booklet entitled “High Level Wellness,” where he describes wellness as a commitment to a lifestyle approach for achieving elevated levels of physical, intellectual, spiritual, and psychological well-being. The philosophy is depicted as multidimensional. It also involves (a) a strong sense of personal responsibility, which means the individual has the responsibility to one’s self to make choices that promotes overall health; and (b) environmental awareness, the knowledge of habits and factors that will help achieve one’s wellness goals.
A wellness oriented lifestyle inspires one to adopt behaviors and habits that endorse improved health and a better quality of life. It also includes the credit that one has psychological, social, spiritual needs and physical needs, with each dimension being necessary for optimal levels of functioning.
